Dublin Huricanes B Vs Greystones Mainers B 01/04/12
Following a “nearly” season last year after reaching the final but losing to the Black Sox 2-1 in a 3 game series, the Mariners B team were looking forward to starting the 2012 season in good form. A tight A game where the Hurricanes had survived a late comeback from the Mariners provided a great atmosphere heading into the game and all were anxious to get the right result this time round. Paddy Fleming led off and got on base through an error from the 3rd baseman. He was then helped home by an infield RBI hit from Jack Farrell who then stole second and was moved to third by a nice hit to left field from 1st Baseman Mark Treacy. John Marcus got a RBI to bring in Jack Farrell to finish off a strong 1st inning with a 2-0 lead.
Following a strong defence and solid pitching from starter Jack Farrell, it was a quick inning and the Mariners added another 2 runs to the lead with Markus Maher and Paddy scoring.
The Hurricanes grabbed a run back after a nice hit into right field from their short-stop. 4-1.
The Mariners widened the gap to 4 again as Jack hit a single and after getting to third from a wild pitch and a ground-out, forced an overthrow from the catcher to get home.
Going into the 4th it looked like the Mariners were easing to victory but through a combination of bad luck, defensive errors and resolute hitting, the “Canes” scored 6 runs to put themselves in the lead 7-5.
The Mariners failed to muster a strong response with only one run scoring (Cian) and left a man on first and third to end the inning.
Cian then relieve Jack of his pitching duties at the bottom of the 5th, but unfortunately again, through some more errors, the Hurricanes managed to add another 4 runs to make the score 11-6.
Sam Marcus returned from a long baseball break this game and opened the 6th inning being hit by a pitch. But the Mariners failed to get past 1st base as Leo Farrell grounded into a fielder’s choice but prevented the double-play with some quick feet.
The Hurricanes added one on to make the score 12-6 and the Mariners 7th inning never really got started with a quick 1-2-3 inning.
In conclusion, a bit more work needed on the training ground but no major worries. The team looked strong in parts and featured a few new faces, who will be sure to develop as the season goes on.

Dublin Huricanes Vs Greystones Mainers 01/04/12
After a week nothing but sunshine, I am sure that I speak for the team in saying that every one was eagerly anticipating the first game of the season and we certainly could not have been rewarded with a better day for our perseverance. After the disappointments of last season the Mariners were eager to take to the field and bury last year in the depths of their minds. The Mariners off-season had been a busy one, with the untimely retirement of Greystones future HOF Steve Stone due to injury the Mariners had a big hole to fill at 2nd base and the number four spot in the batting order, but a young and versatile Mariner team was more than up to the task. The Mariners were also given a huge boost with the acquiring one of the league legends Jaime Cuevas and the return of Rob McGarry who had taken a year out to hone his baseball skills learning new and exotic approaches to the game by traveling around the world. With the Mariners being the away team they batted first and had a relatively quiet first inning with Rob McGarry reaching on base through error and the rest of the order flying out. The Mariners then took to the field with the returning skipper Leo Farrell on the mound. Leo started very strong by retiring the side in order with an array of pitches. Cormac Eklof and The Canes responded however with their own 1-2-3 and thus both side still remained hitless. Leo started the 2nd strong once again retiring the first batter he faced, however after a dodgy ruling of hit by pitch, and a combination of the Canes bats beginning to awaken and a few walks and errors, the Canes were 5 runs ahead. The Mariners were robbed of a chance to leave the bases loaded and no damage done when a ball was hard hit to the third baseman Jack Fairbairn who threw home only for the runner to be called dubiously safe. But no matter, the Mariners bat were soon to have their own say. With a lead of single from Paddy Fleming the Mariners got their first hit of season, Jack Farrell then reached on a fielders choice and a Rob McGarry walked. With two outs and two runners on Leo Farrell then singles to load the bases. This brought up Jaime Cuevas who then cracked a 2 RBI double into the gap to bring the Mariners within 3 runs, Cian O' Riordan followed up with his own sharp line drive to bring in another runner, we now have a ball game on ours hands with only 2 runs in it. With a new found confidence in themselves the Mariners took to the field again, however the canes responded again and through a few singles and a walk the Canes had themselves another 3 runs to make the score 8-3. Dennis Donnelly then came in to relieve for Leo, and proceeded to pitch two scoreless innings. The game then came down to the top of the 7th and the Mariners knew a lot had to be done, with 5 runs in it this was their last chance to stage a comeback and take their opening game. Chuck Adams opening up the inning with a single, Leo was then hit by a pitch, runners on first and second now, no outs. Jaime then steps up and once again delivers in a clutch situation with an RBI single. Runners at 2nd and 3rd no outs and the score at 8-5. Cian O Riordan steps up with already a single to his name, once again he saw his pitch and proceeded to smash it over the centre fielder’s head for a cleanly hit 2 RBI Double, game is now 8-6 with a runner at 2nd. Dennis Donnelly then cracked his first hit of the season to move Cian over to third and leave himself at 1st. Jack Fairbairn then stepped up with a double and a hard line out already under his belt takes and an outside pitch and slaps it to right field, bringing in Cian from three and moving Dennis over to third. The game now stands at 8-7 to the Canes with a runner of 1st and 3rd and NO OUTS. This however is when this fairy tale ended, with two very nice plays by the Pitcher Steve Devito that held Dennis at three and a soft pop up by Paddy Fleming left the game as it was at 8-7 to the Hurricanes. While not a victory, the Mariners left the field with newfound confidence and drive to keep striving for better results. The game also showed just how well the Mariners can hit and shout outs to Leo and Jack Farrell who made up the battery today, both having never started an A game before in either of those positions. The team as a whole had combined for 8 hits, no K's and an OBP of .378, needless to say today was only the very tip of the iceberg and all signs from today indicate that the Mariners no doubt will have a prosperous season with full of triumphs and trophies. New Season starts for Adults
The Greystones Mariners adult team with take on the Hurricanes in an A/B doubleheader this Sunday. The Hurricanes ran away with the league last year going 15-0 in the regular season before failing again to beat the Spartans in the playoff final. The young Mariners will be expecting to prove their potential by taking down the Hurricanes. Rumours abound that this is the strongest Mariners team in years...more to follow.
Extract from Wikipedia on 2010 season
"The 2010 season opened with newcomers to the league "Munster Warriors" beating the Spartans twice. 1-0 and 8-5. The other game in the opening round was the 4-3 victory for the Hurricanes over the Mariners. The next round had the two heavyweights in the league against each other and it was the Spartans who were to come out top with a 6-5 victory over the Hurricanes. The other game in the 2nd round was the Mariners 3-1 victory over the Black Sox. The next round featured one of the most exciting games of the last few years. The Mariners were playing the Black Sox again in Shankhill. Having let a 4-0 lead slip in typical Mariners fashion the Greystones Mariners were 8-5 down in the bottom of the 7th inning with 2 outs. Jack Fairbairn amazingly bunts his way to first (with two outs!) which sets up one of the greatest comebacks ever recorded in the Irish League. The Mariners managed to tie the game into extra innings where the Black Sox scored another run to make the score 9-8 to the Black Sox. Cian O' Riordan stole home to tie up the game. Steven Hayes took a walk to 1st and stole 2nd. Jack Fairbairn steps up to the plate and once again bunts his way to success. An overthrow from the Black Sox catcher past 1st allowed Steven Hayes to score the winning run. A truly great game.
The Mariners were the first team to qualify for the playoffs after the Warriors gave them a double walk-over which ensured they finished in the top two. They're also a pretty sound team so you should probably check them out. - (Very questionable content!!)"
2012 Adult team pre-season training begins
The adult team will have their first training session next Saturday the 18th of February down at shoreline leisure center. From 12-2pm.

Annual North-South Derby this Saturday!
This saturday (8th october) is the 10th annual north/south derby. It is arguably (normally with Conor Duncan) the most hotly contested game all year. There'll be cursing, dirt kicking, blood, spit more cursing, and that'll only be when Steve Stone has been asked to play right field (never gets old!!!). The North sit ugly (this is not a biased e-mail) 5-4 ahead. The South have never even been level on games (not since it was 0-0 anyway), but have won 3 of the last 4.
The game will be preceded by the annual home run derby (Chuck is looking to defend), and will be followed later that night by a night of gloating and drinking in the Grove Bar (Colly's), Kilpeddar (Chuck is looking to defend here also).
This year see's the return of Trevor Martin and Richie Power as captains. They both captained the teams back in 2002, with Trev coming out on top. Richie will be hungry for revenge over his old foe (this is no xmas day trivial pursuit boys!!!). Captains will be in touch at some point this week. Please let them know of your availability.

Mariners are Little League Champs!
The Greystones Mariners are Little League All-Ireland Champions 2011. Our young Mariners came through two tough play-off games to retain the Mike King Trophy at Corkagh Park yesterday. Our Little Leaguers (9-12 years) won the playoff semi final vs Cavan 17-5 in a much tighter game than the score suggests, before going on to win a very tense see-saw final vs our friends and big rivals Garristown Gruffaloes 5-4, with our youngest player John Ascough sliding home in the bottom of the final inning to send the Mariners players and family supporters into ecstasy. Great pitching from Brian Coronella, Osas Ewansiha, Andrew Aling and Matthew McCann - superbly supported by gritty catcher Jordan Whyte, was complemented by a near faultless shift at 1st base by Dylan Kelly, agile infield by Jonathon Howell and Cathal Eddy, textbook base scampering by Daniel Joyce and "nothing gets past me" outfield by Matt Falci. All the players showed real character to fight through the tight spots to make sure that the Mike King Trophy stays with the Mariners into the clubs 21st year in 2012. This was a most competitive Little League season and thus a great achievement by this young team; ten of todays team of eleven are eligible for next season. Well done to all the players, to coaches Michael, Steve and David, and thanks as always for our fantastic parental support. Next Sunday we can celebrate it all at our club's annual BBQ.
Club BBQ set for September 11th
Our Annual club barbeque will take place on Sunday, the 11th of September, start time to be confirmed. We hope to have a game for each of our youth age groups and then finish the day with either a softball or baseball game for those parents present. Our barbeque has always been a fun day in the past so please feel free to come and join us on Sunday week. And here's hoping for a sunny day, or a dry one at the very least!Three Mariners off to Euro Qualifiers
Mariner's Cian O'Riordan, Jack Fairbairn and Leo Farrell travel to Barcelona this Saturday, July 23rd, to represent our National Team in the European Championship Qualifiers. All three players are products of our own youth program. The National team will play against Switzerland, Hungary, host Spain and Finland. You can follow the team's progress on the Baseball Ireland link on our 'News' page above. Best wishes to the National Team and to the three lads!!

Our Little League Mariners returned from a very enjoyable weekend in Oranmore, Galway, with their winning record still intact. The young Mariners split their double-header with the Galway Jays on Saturday, winning the first game by a score of 19-5, and losing a very close second game 3-6. A fun time was had by all, and a few friendships made, which was evident in the friendly game which took place on Sunday morning. The Mariners now have 4 wins and 2 loses so far this this season. Thanks to the Galway Jays for hosting us!

Our Coach Pitch team also travelled to Meath to play the Coach Pitch Gruffaloes, and though they weren't as successful in their game, they all enjoyed their fun (half) day out.
