The first ever (we think) Coach Pitch game in Ireland took place at the Charlesland Sports Centre in Greystones today between the Greystones Mariners and the Garristown Gruffalos and was a great success, enjoyed by all. It will hopefully be the first of many as it was a highly entertaining and close affair, with some great hits and fantastic plays in the field being made by both teams.
The game began fantastically for the home team when the Mariners thwarted the Gruffalos offense with a triple play in the 1st inning. While the Gruffalos did score 3 runs in the 2nd, the Mariners scored 9 runs in their first 2 turns at bat, to jump out into an early lead. But the Gruffalos were starting to find their feet and began to score steadily in each inning from the 3rd onwards, while starting to make some crucial outs on the field as the Mariner bats went quiet. So much so, the Mariners were behind by the 5th inning, a deficit that increased in the 6th, leaving the home team needing 7 runs to win the game. But miraculously a comeback did happen, but instead of scoring 7, the Mariners managed 6 runs to leave the final score tied, sending everyone home happy. It was a fair result in a great and sporting game that was exciting from beginning to end.
Thanks to the Garristown Gruffalos for travelling down for the game and to those who came out to support our young Mariners. We look forward to our next encounter with the Gruffalos, which will take place at our club BBQ on Saturday, the 25th of September, in the Charlesland Sports Centre. Hope to see you all there!
