'B's V Black Sox 36-26 Win

No that score is not a mis-print. In three and a half hours, the Mariner and Black Sox 'B's managed to combine for a total of 62 runs. While the pitchers will be avoiding the stat book, hitters on both teams will be posting their averages to the major leagues. A 9 run Black Sox lead in the first looked ominious for the Mariners, but then so did the Mariner's 10 run lead in the 7th. But a game without logic was what we were witnessing. Long but no doubt fun to play in, it went to extra innings after the Black Sox did overhaul that 10 run deficit but with the Mariner's tacking on another 11 runs in the 8th, could they repeat their 7th inning effort? Thankfully for the Mariner's and anyone spectating, the answer was no.

The Mariners B team pulled out the club's second come-from-behind
victory in one day last Saturday. In fact, at one point they were down
by six runs. Five innings of solid pitching by Jack Fairbairn was not
helped by defensive struggles in the field, nor a strong wind blowing
pop flies over the heads of fielders. One defensive highlight, however,
was a put out at home on a hit to deep left-centre, where Leo Farrell
hit the cut-off man, Conor Duncan, with a perfect throw, and with a
bullet of a relay to the plate for the out. The Hurricanes' pitchers
threw strikes, which meant nearly all of the Mariners' production came
from putting the ball in play. This, along with two-out rallies in
multiple innings, bodes well for the future of the club. So does the
promotion of another two senior youth players, Michael Woods-O'Rourke
and Darren Gillen, to the adult team.

Mariners B Squad setting the early season pace
The Greystones Mariners Adult B Team has come out swinging this season! After a marathon 36-26 debut win against the Black Sox, they?ve increased their record to 3-0 with two subsequent victories. On April 21, a 7th-inning rally propelled the Mariner Bs past the Hurricanes, 13-12. And this past Sunday solid pitching and some impressive fielding combined for a 16-8 win over the Spartans.
The team are coming together nicely under the stewardship of rookie skipper Rory O?Riordan, with young talent and wily (if creaky) veterans providing a winning combination.
The team have a break until May 19, when they?re back at Shanganagh Park in Shankill for a re-match against the always tough Spartans.
