Youth Baseball Returns For The Autumn!
Youth baseball will recommence for the Autumn this coming Friday, the 27th of August, for T-ball, Coach Pitch and Little League at 4.30 to 6pm, and on Sunday, the 29th of August, for the Cadets from 1 to 3pm. All sessions take place on the baseball diamond at the Charlesland Sports Centre, Greystones, and will run for five or six weeks, weather and light permitting. We hope you can all make it out for our last bit of baseball before we begin our winter break. There should be games for our Little Leaguers and Cadets coming up, as well as the possibility of a first game for our Coach Pitch group. New players are always welcome to any session!
Don't forget, our annual club BBQ takes place all day on Saturday, September 25th and will include a game for all age groups, and may include a parents game. All players, parents, siblings and friends are welcome to attend this event.
The adult Greystones Mariners are having a great season. Our 'A' team are poised to top the 'A' league table for the first time with one regular season game remaining and are guaranteed second place, putting them in a great position for the up-coming playoffs that should include the Hurricanes, Northstars, and reigning champion Spartans. Check their progress on 'baseballireland.com' and see where you can go to support them for their final regular season game and playoff games.
The Mariner 'Bs' have also had a very good season and have finished in a comfortable second place in their league.

Mariners Youth teams taste success in Cork
The Mariners youth section made the annual trip to the Cork Druids Blitz held on Saturday 5th June in Blarney, Co. Cork. A large contingent of players and parents travelled down to sample the hospitality of the Muskerry Arms Hotel and to enjoy a day of baseball. On both counts it was an enjoyable and successful trip!
Little League
The Mariners got the Blitz going with a game against the host Cork Druids – a team in a development phase after several strong years under the guidance of dedicated coaches Jason and Michelle Murphy. They are clearly on the right track as 18 Druids players warmed up on the sideline awaiting the opening pitch.
Cork were the home team and the Mariners took a full quota of six runs in their first at-bat. Brian Coronella pitched very well, shutting out the Druids with accurate pitching aided by smart fielding plays including a neat scoop and throw by shortstop Andrew Aling to first baseman Matt McCann for an efficient put-out. Second baseman Jonathan Howell also contributed with some slick fielding of his own, and with the current combo the Mariners can count on a solid middle infield for a couple of years to come.
With this confident start, the Mariners notched another six runs in the second inning, including a courageous steal of home by left fielder Pawel Krysa. The trend for the game was set with the Druids finding the Mariners pitching too hot to handle and all the Mariners batters connecting for solid base hits and finishing with a flourish courtesy of a huge home run by catcher Ryan Turner.
Result: Mariners 18, Druids 0.
Our second game against the Clare Dolphins was a different kettle of fish (sorry – couldn’t resist…and yes I know they’re mammals). The Mariners were the home team and Matt McCann took the mound against the formidable new outfit from Clare. In the first inning the Dolphins quickly showed that they were a physically mature hitting side, with a lead-off base hit followed by a home run, resulting in two runs coming across. The Clare side looked ready to rack up a big inning. But with two outs and the bases loaded, Mariners hurler Matt McCann had other ideas. He knuckled down and forced the Dolphins clean-up batter into a pop-up well snagged by catcher Ryan Turner to leave three runners stranded.
The Mariners then came to bat but didn’t really get going against an experienced pitcher ‘guesting’ for the Dolphins and came away with no runs. At the start of the second, the Dolphins again flexed their bats and got runners on base. The coaching staff decided on a tactical change and brought Brian Coronella back to the mound. Fortunately, he still seemed to have some gas in the tank and went on to strike out the two most dangerous batters in the Clare line-up. To finish the inning, catcher Ryan Turner threw down to third baseman Conor Rubaclava to catch a Clare runner attempting to poach an extra base.
In the bottom on the second inning the Mariners hitters scrambled to bring home one run, setting the stage for a tight finish.
In the top of the third, the Mariners shut down the Dolphins, and in their half of the inning managed to tie the score, 2-2, with some clutch hitting and base-running.
Brian Coronella shut down Clare again in the top of the fourth, striking out the side. The Mariners now needed (literally) to ‘step up to the plate’, especially as the Dolphins brought back their main pitcher. The Mariners didn’t disappoint. David Kabele waited out the Dolphins ace hurler and was rewarded with a walk. He then stole second. The stage was set for a dramatic finish. Jami Turner matched his brother’s earlier hitting heroics with a superb line drive into center field to bring David home with the winning run - as sweet a “walk-off” victory as any in Mariners Little League history.
Result: Mariners 3, Clare 2.
In the Final the Mariners again played Cork, who had earlier beaten the up-and-coming Oranmore Jays. Confidence was high after the Mariners thrilling come-from-behind win over the Clare Dolphins and it showed in the first inning with two big home runs from Dylan Kelly and Matt McCann to help bring in six runs.
After two stellar stints behind the plate, Ryan Turner peeled off his catcher’s gear and took the mound. He faced a pesky Cork line-up - the strike zone for some of their younger batters was very hard to locate - but Ryan performed well, with just four runs given up in two innings. After the Mariners posted another six runs (including two audacious steals of home) in the bottom half of the second, the game was called as the time limit had elapsed.
Result: Mariners 12, Cork 4.
In a closing ceremony distinguished by a lot of smiling faces, the Mariners squad were presented with their Winners Plaques and went home happy after another great blitz organized by our great friends the Cork Druids! Now we can look forward to our Home Blitz at Mariners Field on Saturday 19th June!
Greystones Mariners: Andrew Aling, Brian Coronella, Matt McCann, Jonathan Howell, Dylan Kelly, David Kabele, Pawel Krysa, Conor Rubaclava, Jami Turner, Ryan Turner.

Cadets
Six of the Greystones Mariners Cadets (13-16yrs) were also in Cork this weekend and got to play in a friendly double-header against the Kerry Green Sox as part of combined team that included players from Cork and Athlone. The Mariners have not had a Cadet team compete for the last couple of years and so opportunities like this for the Mariner players to get some playing time are valued greatly.
Baseball is of course all about pitching, and while the pitchers here struggled occasionally with control, it was the quality of the hitting from both teams that most impressed this weekend. At times the pitchers can only have been impressed as balls whizzed pass them or were hit high over their heads and on a couple of occasions nearly out-of-sight. Of course, outs were recorded and innings were completed, but not before there were several doubles, triples and a homerun to admire. There were some great plays in the field also, including a double play and a fantastic catch by a Kerry pitcher on the hardest hit ball of the day that came right back at him in a hurry. And not to be too down on the pitchers, there were several strikeouts during the course of the games. In the end the series was split a game apiece, which was not only a fair reflection on the day but also meant everyone went home happy.
GreyCork Squad:
Carraig Byrne, James Carr, Daniel Daly-Roynane, Jack Farrell, Katie Glynn,
Graham Murphy, Michael Murphy, Rory Nichols, Mark Treacy, Aidan ??, Derek ??.
Thanks to Andrei and Elaine from Kerry for changing their plans and making it a fun day of baseball all round. A big thanks of course to our hosts, Michelle and Jason Murphy, whose dedication, hard work and laughter, provide us with easily the most fun event on the baseball calendar. And to all our parents who consistently support the players and coaches and add greatly to the enjoyment of the weekend.

Mariners Double-up Sox
You might have got a feeling of déjà vu in Shankill this Saturday with the league schedule throwing up a repeat of last weeks match-up, with the one exception being that the Mariners were the home team. However, it may have been the same location with the same teams and the same starting pitchers, but this weeks game against the Black Sox A's in Shanganagh Park was a very different affair from last weeks 3-1 pitching duel victory for Greystones.
It started similarly enough to the previous week with the Mariners holding the Sox scoreless, helped once again by solid pitching from Cian O'Riordan and some great fielding. The Mariners then scored early on Rob McGarry's magnificent 2 out bases-clearing triple in the 2nd to put them 3-0 up. They added another run in the 3rd inning when Leo Farrell knocked in Chuck Adams following his base hit. The Mariner machine seemed to be cruising with their 4-0 lead, but the wheels came off in absurd fashion in the 4th inning in the kind of inning that has entered Mariner lore as 'one of those innings'.
The Black Sox had loaded the bases with a couple of hits and a walk, when the Sox number 8 hitter popped up between our pitcher and catcher in foul territory. Imminently catchable, the ball landed and a walk ensued, and then another walk, followed by an out, and then a serious of over-throws and poor-descion making in the field on a couple more Black Sox hits either side of a strikeout, before another walk and the final out of the inning left the score 8-4 Sox. Now this did seem like déjà vu, as we have all lost count of how many times this has happened to the team before. But the comeback that followed, while perhaps not the team's first comeback, can surely be counted as one of its finest.
It began with a pitching change that saw Dennis Donnelly holding the Sox scoreless over the final 3 innings by keeping the ball on the ground and in the air to give his fielders a chance to make outs. The Mariners pulled 1 run back in the 5th following 2 outs when a couple of hits and a couple of daring walks from the bottom of the order brought in a run. A scoreless 6th meant the Mariners had it all to do to make up that 3 run deficit heading into the bottom of the last inning. Just to add to the tension, what followed was achieved behind 2 quick outs. Jack Fairbairn got things going with an infield hit, and then stole 2nd. Jim Gorman walked to bring up Cian O'Riordan who got himself a base hit to score Jack, with Jim scoring on an error. Cian moved to 2nd on a passed ball and then tied the game when Dennis Donnelly hit a great double. However, it would take another inning to decide this game as the Mariners failed to score Dennis from scoring position leaving the score 8 runs apiece after 7 innings.
And so to the 8th, where the Mariners quickly found themselves behind once more as the Sox nicked a run in their half of the inning. But comebacks fuel comebacks it seems. Again, it was the bottom of the order that did the job. With 1 out, Leo Farrell got a walk, stole a base, before reaching 3rd on Stephan Hayes' base hit. Hayes too stole a base, to put the winning run just 180 feet away. It was key to put the ball in play and that is exactly what Jack Fairbairn did, with a peach of a bunt. The play that followed included an error that allowed both runs to score and the Mariners to win a most exciting and close game.
It was tough on the Black Sox, who had contributed greatly to the spectacle, to lose like that. If any team can empathize with them however, it would be this Mariner team, who have lost many heartbreakers themselves, and with this in mind, I think no one could deny them a reversal like this. There was a massive determination throughout the team to not be beaten and it showed in every aspect of the game, but particularly through the entire line-up. It was particularly great to see the 6-9 guys contribute so much to the game and the win.
The only déjà vu I wish to see with this team in the future, is a repeat of the comebacks.
Final Score: Dublin Black Sox 9, Greystones Mariners 10.
And so to the B game between the same two teams. The B's were looking for a reversal of the loss they had suffered the previous weekend and set out with their usual mix of rookies, youngsters, veterans and in-betweeners to achieve it.
Unpredictability is often the norm in B games, where just about anything can happen. A mid-inning double-digit lead is no guarantee of victory at this level for example. But if the A game had the swings and roundabouts, this game from the get go, was a Sunday drive to Wexford with grampa, for the Mariners.
With Jim Gorman pitching, strikes are sure to follow, but what was most impressive was the support he got from all areas of the field. Ground balls in the infield were dealt with efficiently while fly-balls in the outfield were snagged with little fuss or drama. The most spectacular play of the day was John Marcus' grab of a ball lined hard and right into him at 2nd base, which allowed him to double-up the runner who had strayed to far off 1st. And this is how it was defensively for this game, with nothing given away.
The offence too went about its business effectively, scoring a run in the 1st inning, 2 in the 3rd and another 2 in the 5th inning with the top and middle of the Mariner order keeping the Sox busy for most of the game. Jim Gorman was 3 for 3 with a double and a walk, while Steve 'stiff-back' Coronella had a .750 on-base percentage, which wont have helped his back.
If I'm making this game sound dull, it wasn't. It was a splendid performance from the whole team to score runs where needed and to hold scoreless a Sox team that had scored 8 runs themselves the week before.
Final Score: Dublin Black Sox 0, Greystones Mariners 5.
2010 Season Under Way
The 2010 league season is under way for both the adult and junior Greystones Mariners.
The A and B adult teams kicked off their season with two close defeats to the Dublin Hurricanes last weekend in Clondalkin. This weekend saw the Mariners take on the Black Sox under a cloudless and plane-less sky in Shanganagh Park, Shankill.
The Mariner A's got off to a great start, with Chuck Adams and Steve Stone, scoring a run each in the top of the 1st inning with the RBI hits coming from Ross Graham and Peter Lang, who ended the day with 3 hits. Young pitcher Cian O'Riordan then took to the mound to try and hold this Mariner lead. What followed was a fine display of pitching as Cian kept the usually solid hitting Black Sox guessing for most of the game. He did give up his share of ground balls but he was helped hugely by some excellent in-fielding particularly from 3rd baseman Jack Fairbairn and shortstop Chuck Adams. Despite several blown calls by the umpire all in the Black Sox favour, the Mariners held the Dublin team scoreless with the next run coming from the Mariners in the 5th inning. Even with a 3 run lead the Mariners could not relax as the Black Sox had threatened to score on a couple of occasions. In the 7th inning, another poor call at 1st allowed the game to continue and this time the Black Sox did score. But this was to be their only run as Cian maintained his composure to close the game out and give Greystones a fine 3-1 victory.
The Mariner B's were not so fortunate in their game, losing 5-8 to the Black Sox B's. However the game was used as a rehabilitation start for pitcher Dennis Donnelly who it was good to see back throwing.
While the adults played in Shankill, our Little League (U13's) team was in Corkagh Park, Clondalkin for their first games of the season against the Clondalkin Cardinals and the Cavan Comets.
In game 1, the young Mariners took on the Cardinals. Matthew McCann pitched very well, giving up no walks in the game, and was helped by some solid fielding from the whole team. With the score close heading into the final inning, the Mariners scored 3 runs to win this game 6-3.
In game 2 the opposition were the Cavan Comets. Ryan Turner pitched for Greystones, who were holding a 4-3 lead until the Comets scored 5 runs in the 4th inning and another 3 in the 5th. The Mariner bats seemed to have gone quiet before exploding again late in the game when Ryan hit a massive home run. This helped his team to score 5 runs but it wasn't enough to catch the Comets . Final score Greystones Mariners 9, Cavan Comets 11.
Conor Rubalcava caught in both games and played very well behind the plate for the Mariners.
Both games were as close as the scores suggest, so this team can look forward to a some tight encounters in the future.

Young Mariners Make BI Squads
Congratulations to Mariner's, Carraig Byrne, Brian Coronella and Mark Treacy who made it on to the Baseball Ireland team's traveling to the USA and Poland this summer.
Following the recent tryouts in Cavan, Brian has been chosen for the Under 13's team going to Rhode Island in the US, and Carraig and Mark will be going to Kutno in Poland with the Under 15's team.
Well done guys!
New Season On Its Way. Open Day Scheduled.
Greystones Mariner Baseball 2010 will start up again soon with the return of many familiar faces as well as a new addition to its roster.
This season will see the club re-commence its Cadet team (13 to 16 year olds). A new coach, Leo Farrell, is taking the reins and with several teams around the country to challenge, not to mention a Baseball Ireland planned trip to Poland for some 13-14 yr olds, this should be a fun year for our teenage players.
We will continue to run our very successful T-Ball (5-7yr olds), Coach Pitch (7-9yr olds) and Little League (10-12yr olds) groups, with our Little League team scheduled to participate in several Blitz's, and in the Northern division of a new league format. Greystones will host its own Blitz on Saturday the 19th of June and its annual club barbeque in September. So there is lots of baseball for all ages to come out and enjoy. Here's hoping for a fun, and dry, season.
We are planning an Open Day for all new players interested in giving the game a try, and for those returning players a chance to just get in that little bit more baseball. So come on down and check out what this unique sport is all about. You don't need any experience or any equipment, just yourself and a desire to try a new game.
This Open Day is on Saturday the 6th of March at Charlesland Sports Centre, in Greystones and will run from 12noon until 2pm on the pitch inside the running track.
The Open Day is for all new players in all age groups, and baseball is for both girls and boys to play together.
If you have any questions, please call Paul on 086 367 5056.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
